This is a safe, educational and enjoyable way to learn about backpacking in the Smokies. Participants must be in good physical condition and hike 5-8 miles a day in rugged, mountainous terrain, carrying a heavy backpack. In addition to carrying your own gear, you should expect to carry group gear (tents, food, stoves). Program lasts from Friday morning to Sunday afternoon. Woody CabinTwo Night Stay in Waynesville Cabin with Guided Hike by Former Deputy Superintendent – Rustic “dog trot” style cabin that sleeps four located in Waynesville, North Carolina. Two bedrooms and one bathroom comprise one half of the cabin, with the dog trot separating them from the kitchen/living room side. Also enjoy a wrap around porch with outdoor fireplace. The logs and flooring date to the late 1800’s and were removed from the Steve Woody home site in the  Cataloochee section of Great Smoky Mountains National Park in 1950. The cabin was designed and constructed in 1955 for Jonathan Woody (son of Steve Woody) and is being donated by Stephen and Mary Bruce Woody, grandson of Steve Woody and long time Friends of the Smokies board member. The cabin is tastefully furnished and situated on the west side of Waynesville within walking distance of downtown Waynesville and Hazelwood Village. In addition to the two-night stay, a guided hike is being offered by former Deputy Superintendent, Kevin FitzGerald. A variety of hiking options will be available, including high elevation hikes off the Blue Ridge Parkway at Waterrock Knob or Richland  Balsam or low elevation hikes in Cataloochee Valley.
